Cory J. Powell, Esq.—The Angling Attorney

I grew up in North Central Florida, in a small town called Chiefland (just west of Gainesville) though I have made ties with various areas of Florida and its waterways throughout my life. Ft. Myers has always been my base for deep sea fishing, and I now practice law in St. Petersburg and enjoy the inshore action of Tampa Bay while out on my kayak.

I have a blue collar background, spending nearly a decade as an auto painter and body man in various collision shops. This experience has proven to be incredibly valuable in evaluating and litigating auto accident personal injury cases now as an attorney.

Once I decided it was time to retire my spray guns as an auto painter, I left the blue collar world and pursued a legal degree. I began by majoring in English at the University of Florida. After obtaining my bachelor’s degree at UF, I moved to my new home in St. Petersburg to study at Stetson University College of Law, where I competed on the nation’s top-rated trial team and obtained my J.D. degree, as well as my LL.M., a legal masters degree, in Advocacy.

After passing the bar exam, I began my legal career as a private defense and personal injury attorney. During this time, I spent most of every day either in a court room advocating for clients in hearings and trials or conducting numerous depositions, with over 700 individual criminal and civil depositions under my belt in just my first four years of practicing law.

I then decided to round out my legal experience, so I went behind enemy lines and worked for a large corporate firm representing insurance companies. It did not take me long to begin to despise the business practices of insurance companies, and, after learning what I needed to on the other side, I went back to representing the people, where I belong. I now work as an insurance dispute attorney handling homeowner’s insurance and personal injury cases with the fantastic firm of Herman & Wells. Our office is located in Pinellas Park, Florida—come by and say hello if you need legal help or representation.

When I am not working for my clients, I enjoy playing guitar, playing with my dogs, watching football, and, of course, fishing! I hope that you enjoy the videos I post and that the advice is helpful. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you are going through, or expect to go through, an insurance dispute. Let me make your life easier—I’m the Angling Attorney, I’ll find the angles in your case.
